If you’re anything like me, you know our four-legged friends are part of the family! And if there’s one thing dogs love, it’s getting outside, burning off some energy, and making a few new friends along the way. Luckily, there are some great dog parks in Red Deer to do just that.
One of the things I love about living in Red Deer, Alberta, is how many beautiful outdoor spaces we have right in our own backyard. Whether you’re new to the area, thinking about moving to Red Deer, or have lived here for years, there are some great places to explore with your dog.
So grab the leash, some treats, and maybe a coffee for yourself! Let’s check out the best dog parks in Red Deer and where to find them.
The Off-Leash Dog Parks in Red Deer
The City of Red Deer has two designated off-leash dog parks: Oxbows in the south and Three Mile Bend in the north.
1. Oxbows Off-Leash Dog Park – South Red Deer
Location: Corner of 19 Street and 40 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta
If you’re looking for a place where your dog can run, play, and socialize, Oxbows Off-Leash Dog Park is definitely worth checking out! This 16-hectare park was designed specifically for dogs and their owners, and there’s plenty of space to explore.
What you’ll find at Oxbows:
- Winding walking trails and different types of terrain
- A designated area for smaller dogs
- An agility park for some extra fun
- Open areas for training and playing
- Rest areas for owners
- Plenty of opportunities for dogs to socialize
One thing I really like about this park is that it’s not just an open field. There are trails to explore, and the different areas give your dog a chance to enjoy something new. If you have a smaller dog, or a pup that prefers playing with dogs closer to its own size, the small-dog area is a great feature.
Best for: Dog owners looking for a dedicated off-leash park with walking trails, agility features, and a separate small-dog area.

2. Three Mile Bend Off-Leash Dog Park – North Red Deer
Location: 76 Street, accessed from Riverside Drive, Red Deer, Alberta
If your dog loves exploring nature, Three Mile Bend might become one of your favourite places! Located along the Red Deer River on the North Bank Trail, Three Mile Bend Recreation Area is a beautiful 55-hectare natural area with a designated off-leash dog area.
What you’ll find at Three Mile Bend:
- A designated, fenced off-leash dog area
- Scenic walking trails
- Beautiful views of the Red Deer River
- Ponds and natural surroundings
- Picnic areas
- Lots of space to explore
This park has a completely different feel from Oxbows. Instead of a purpose-built dog park, you’re surrounded by trees, water, and nature. It’s a great reminder of just how beautiful Red Deer really is! Keep an eye on your dog around the water and wildlife, and make sure you stay within the designated off-leash area.
Best for: Dogs and owners who enjoy nature, longer walks, and exploring the outdoors.
Which of the Dog Parks in Red Deer Is Best for Your Dog?
That really depends on your dog! If your dog loves agility, socializing, or having a separate area for smaller dogs, Oxbows might be your first choice. If your dog enjoys exploring trails, sniffing everything in sight, and spending time in nature, Three Mile Bend might be the winner.
My suggestion? Try both and let your dog decide!
Other Dog-Friendly Places to Walk
Not every outdoor adventure needs to be at an off-leash park. Red Deer has a wonderful trail system and several beautiful parks where you can enjoy a walk with your dog on a leash, where permitted:
- Bower Ponds: A beautiful area for a relaxing walk with scenic pond views.
- Heritage Ranch: A lovely spot with wooded surroundings and walking trails.
- McKenzie Trails: A great option for enjoying Red Deer’s natural scenery.
These are not designated off-leash areas. Dogs must stay on a leash, and some areas may have additional restrictions, so always check the posted signs.
A Few Things to Remember Before You Go
We all want our dogs to have fun, but keeping everyone safe is just as important. The City of Red Deer’s off-leash rules include:
- Dogs must have a current City of Red Deer licence.
- Keep your dog on a leash until you’re inside the off-leash area.
- Keep your dog in sight and under control. Your dog must come when called.
- Always carry a leash with you.
- Pick up after your dog and fill in any holes it digs.
- Keep vaccinations up to date.
- If your dog shows signs of aggression, it’s time to head home.
And remember, not every dog enjoys a busy dog park. Sometimes a quiet walk on a leash is just as much fun!
Why Dog-Friendly Neighbourhoods Matter When Buying a Home
As a local Red Deer REALTOR®, I know that finding the right home isn’t just about the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, or the size of the backyard. It’s about finding a home that fits your lifestyle.
For some buyers, that means being close to schools, shopping, or work. For others, it means a fenced backyard, walking trails nearby, or a dog park where their four-legged family members can enjoy themselves. When you’re looking at homes for sale in Red Deer, think about the things you enjoy doing outside your home, too. Your neighbourhood is part of your home-buying decision! (If you’re starting that search, my Buyer’s Guide to Central Alberta is a great place to begin.)
Exploring Our City, One Paw at a Time
Whether you’re spending an afternoon at Oxbows or exploring the natural beauty of Three Mile Bend, Red Deer has some great outdoor spaces for dog lovers. And sometimes the simplest things, like a walk with your dog, are the best part of the day.
Have you visited either of these dog parks? Which one is your dog’s favourite? I’d love to hear!
If you’re thinking about buying or selling a home in Red Deer or the surrounding Central Alberta communities, I’d be happy to help you find a place that works for the whole family, paws included!
